Vue de l’une des Portes ou Arcades de la Grande Gallerie de Palmyre (View of one of the gateways or arcades in the great gallery at Palmyra)
Etching from Voyage Pittoresque de la Syrie, de la Phénicie, de la Palestine, et de la Basse Egypte. 1799-1800, by Louis François Cassas, French, born 1756, died 1872.
Cassas who had been trained in both the Neoclassical and Rococo schools of painting specialised in Antiquities. In 1784 he accompanied the new French Ambassador to the sublime Port in Istanbul and travelled extensively in the Levant where he pictured archaeological sites, many of which had not previously been recorded. This book, published in 1797 was the result. He later became drawing professor at the Gobelins Tapestry Manufactory and also produced many maquettes of classical statues which were highly influential in the Ecole des Beaux Arts.
The sumptuous etchings from this book are deservedly admired. His work precedes and is regarded by many as artistically superior to that of his English counterpart, David Roberts. Palmyra, an oasis in the south of modern Syria, controlled much of the trade between India and Europe from the fall of Petra in106 AD, until conquered by the Romans in 297. It became extremely wealthy and developed its own distinctive but strongly Hellenised architecture.
295 x 435mm (11¾ x 17 in) Very good condition. Some extra folds near centrefold. $1000.00
