De Sainson was the official artist on Dumont d’Urville (1790-1842)’s ship, l’Astrolabe, which visited Hobart in 1827 during his round-the-world journey of exploration.

This plate comes from the official report of that journey, Voyage de decouvertes de ‘l'Astrolabe’: execute par ordre du roi, pendant les années 1826-1827-1828-1829, published n Paris in 1833.
