A Complete Map of the Southern Continent

Survey’d by Capt. Abel Tasman & depicted by Order of the East Indian Company in Holland in the Stadt House at Amsterdam

Antique chart depicting the coast lines of New Holland (Australia), New Guinea, Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania) and New Zealand as mapped by Tasman.

With ornate cartouche and two blocks of text describing the two lands. By Emmanuel Bowen (1694–1767) after Melchisedech Thevenot (1620-92)’s map of 1663 From John Harris, Navigatium atque Iternerantium Bibliotheca, London 1744

This map is famous and much sought by collectors as the first map of Australia and New Zealand by an Englishman.

One of the text plates draws on Purry, a Dutchman who was trying to promote settlement in Nuyt’s land (S Western Australia) “It is impossible to conceive a Country that promises fairer from its situation, than this of Terra Australia; no longer incognita …”
